As you start to explore various applications with the N95 you may hit a couple of troubles with the certification system. With this phone you *cannot* install un-certified applications anymore, even if you want to. Luckily there are workarounds for most of the issues...
NB: I provide this information for your interest only. If you actually do any of this you do so at your own risk.
Uncertified Application
Some applications come uncertified, particularly those that are home-brew rather than corporate made. A good example of this is Y-Browser. You can deal with this by self-signing, a process which requires you to register with SymbianSigned as a developer in order to obtain your own certificate which can then be used to sign .sis applications. It's a slightly complicated process, but there is a very excellent step-by-step tutorial at the Symbian Weblog.
Certificate Expired
If you get a message that says "certificate expired" it's pretty easy to deal with, just change the system date on your phone back a year or two and the application should install correctly. After installing you can change the date back without a problem.
Hope this is useful!

Wow.
I mean seriously.
There's cool, there's incredibly cool, then there's playing Quake on your mobile, connected to your tv, using motion to control the game! Yet that's exactly whats possible, and it brings all sorts of childish giggles as you play this classic game in a way you never expected!
It's just great!
Firstly you'll need to get Quake running on your N95, and to do this you can follow the instructions at SimplySymbian. I am one of the people lucky nerdy enough to have a full copy of Quake on cd still, so that part wasn't a problem :)
The instructions are pretty well written and easy to follow, and if you follow them correctly you shouldn't have any problems.
Next you'll need NokMote, a genius app that allows you to control your N95 by tilting the Phone. Currently this is not on public release but if you make a donation to the author you can be privy to the alpha release. You can find the website here.
Here's a sample of the fun in action that I've dug up on YouTube...
Had some problems with the N95 today, which I managed to resolve.
Basically when trying to enter Data Transfer Mode (where the phone comes up as a USB storage device on the pc) I was getting an error: "Unable to activate data transfer mode. Mass memory is in use by another application."
Through fixing this I learned some important lessons that you should all bear in mind when installing apps:
- Don't install always-running apps onto the memory card. This includes anti-theft software, anti-virus software, and some other apps such as Shozu
- Don't install themes to the memory card, or be willing to deactivate the theme whenever you want to use data transfer mode.
One of the cleverest and most useful applications around for Symbian based phones that I have seen, Mobile Anti Theft lets you stalk your mobile-thieves and makes it much easier for police to track them down.
The premise is pretty simple, if a new SIM is inserted into your phone a message is secretly sent to three different numbers which gives you the telephone number of the new SIM card. Using this you could call the thief, or pass it on to the police who will hopefully be able to use it to find the perpetrator...and your phone!
Currently the app is selling for a one-off cost of £8, which if you ask me is far better than most of the insurance packages offered!
Check it out here: http://www.clickapps.com/moreinfo.htm?pid=14954§ion=S60V3
Could it get better? Well actually, yes but currently not for the N95.
For Windows Mobile devices W.I.M.P. or Where Is My Phone does pretty much the same, but with the addition of tying into your mobile's GPS functionality. However it doesn't look like we have anything that does this just yet for our beloved N95s. If anyone knows of such an app please let me know!
EDIT: Keep your eyes open for Guardian3rd, which will do all the above plus lots more! There will also be a free version available.
One of the most widely promoted selling points of the n95 is the ability to use msn messenger on it. So you can imagine i was more than a little disappointed to find that in fact it doesn't work!
Ok, that is a slight exaggeration. It works if you are using an "@hotmail.com" account, but if like myself you use another provider to connect to msn with, you're stuck. The option for "other account" is there, but if you choose that the app seems to freeze up!
Don't dispair though! There is a solution in the form of "fring" (www.fring.com). Not only does fring let you sign into msn properly, but it also lets you sign into a number of other providers simultaneously! On top of those in the screenie below fring also supports yahoo and aim. You could call it the Trillian for the mobile.
Fring isn't perfect by any means, beyond basic connectivity and voip the features are thin on the ground. For example i can't find a way to view the contact details, or hide offline contacts. Still, it works where the official solutions fall over!
